The Centre des Matériaux is one of the research centres of the Ecole des Mines de Paris, which depends on the Ministry of the Economy, Finances and Employment. The Ecole is also a member of ParisTech and of the Groupe des Ecoles des Mines (GEM).

The Centre des Matériaux is associated to the CNRS as a Mixed Research Unit (UMR 7633). Furthermore, the Centre is a member of the Paris Region Federation on Mechanics of Materials, Structures and Processing (Fédération Francilienne Mécanique des Matériaux, Structures, Procédés).

In partnership with ARMINES, the Ecole des Mines de Paris has been designated as a Carnot Institute (Institut CARNOT M.I.N.E.S). This distinction was awarded to the group of ecoles des mines in 2006 by the French government in recognition of their success in developing collaborative research partnerships with industry. The Centre also participates in the national clusters of competitiveness MOVE'O (automotive), ASTech (aeronautics and aerospace), System@tic (numerical systems), EMC2 (composites), i-Trans (transports) and Céramique (ceramics). It is also a member of several scientific clusters of excellence such as the Pôle Scientifique d'Evry Vals de Seine and Teratec.

Traditional research areas covered by the Centre des Matériaux

  • material development;
  • study of processing;
  • experimental characterisation and modelling of material behaviour;
  • development of analytical and numerical models for structural analyses and for the simulation of microstructures.

New research areas

  • numerical simulation of processing;
  • biomaterials;
  • development of an integrated computational chain going from the processing or solidification stages to the mechanical integrity of the actual components and structures;
  • multiscale and multiphysics modelling of complex phenomena
